Unlocking the NRK archive
NRK can make all its archive up to 1997 available to the public through an unprecedented 2013 agreement with the rights agency Norwaco. According to Norwaco "NRK's archives are a major and important part of Norwegian cultural heritage and in many ways represent our common memory as a modern nation". What are the challenges in making this vast amount of material available?
Archival TV presents many opportunities: for historians of culture and politics, it is an indispensable source; for linguists, it is probably the largest collection of instances of 'natural language'; for researchers in literature, it offers both stagings of classic dramas and adaptations of major works. Familiar archive programmes are being used in therapy for Alzheimers sufferers.
Maja Wettmark, Head of Metadata NRK, and Anne Kirsten Bakke, Development Director in Archive Publishing NRK, will outline the technical and creative issues that this process has brought.
We hope that this seminar will produce more ideas for presentation and use of NRK's archive programming, as well as initiating collaborations between university researchers and NRK's archive.
