Datajournalistikknettverket: Universell utforming: Gjør det selv. (NO)

Datajournalistikknettverket:  Lager du digital journalistikk i form av tekst, foto, lyd, video – eller kode? Da bør du ha universell utforming i tankene. Men hva betyr det egentlig? Synes du at UU er litt ullent, tror du det er forbeholdt fagfolk eller vet du rett og slett ikke hvor du skal begynne? Philipp Bock, redaksjonell utvikler i Bergens Tidende, presenterer her syv gjør-det-selv-triks til deg.

25 May, 2021: 
Hvor står vi kampen mot desinformasjon og falske nyheter (NO)

25. mai inviterte Media City Bergen til en formiddagskonferanse hvor Norges fremste eksperter ga verdufull innsikt i de samfunsmessige og demokratiske utfordringene knyttet til desinfirmasjon og «Fake news». Og diskuterte hvordan kan ny teknologi dempe trusselen fra desinformasjon og falske nyheter.

On 25 May, Media City Bergen held a conference with Norway's foremost experts provided valuable insight into the social and democratic challenges associated with disinformation and "Fake news", and discussed how new technology can help to mitigate the threat of misinformation and fake news. The event was only available in Norwegian.

 


20 May, 2021: 
Datajournalistikknettverket: Den store folkevandringa (NO)

MCB JoLab: Datajournalistikknettverket presenterte prosjektet Den store folkevandringa. Landslaget for lokalaviser (LLA), Senter for undersøkende journalistikk (SUJO) og NRK har sammen med 99 lokalaviser samarbeidet om et stort journalistisk prosjekt om flyttemønster. Digitale verktøy har ikke overraskende stått helt sentralt i arbeidet med journalistikken. Bergit Sønstebø Svaneid og Anders Nøkling, begge fra NRK, fortalte hvordan de har arbeidet med prosjektet gjennom presentasjonen «Den store folkevandringa – slik gjorde vi det».

This presentation showcased how NRK, The National Association for Local Newspapers (LLA), and Center for Investigative Journalism (SUJO) collaborated on outlying migration patterns in Norway. The event was only available in Norwegian. 


22 April, 2021: 
Datajournalistikknettverket: Slik kartla vi kjønnsbalansen på norske nyhetsnettsider ved hjelp av datastøttede verktøy og kunstig intelligens (NO)

MCB JoLab: Datajournalistikknettverket presenterte hvordan NRK programmerte en robot til å scanne norske nyhetssider i fire måneder. Den fant flere tegn på et samfunnsproblem, nemlig kjønnsbalanse i mediene. Funnene resulterte i saken "Alvorlige gamle menn og smilende unge kvinner", som ble publisert 8. mars 2021 på nrk.no.

This presentation showcased how NRK programmed a robot to scan Norwegian news sites for a period of four months, revealing biased gender balance in the media. The findings resulted in the story "Serious old men and smiling young women", which was published on 8 March 2021, at nrk.no. The event was only available in Norwegian.



22 October, 2020: 
Slik dekker vi valget (NO)

Torsdag 22. oktober inviterte MCB JoLab til arrangementet «Slik dekker vi valget», med fokus på hvordan norske mediehus dekker det som omtales som det viktigste presidentvalget i USA noensinne. 

On 22 October MCB JoLab invited Norwegian publishers and broadcasters to present their coverage of the then upcoming 2020 US election. The event was only available in Norwegian.



20 October, 2020:
James Ball: Who controls the internet, and how do we take it back? (EN) 

Why does the internet keep creating tech giants like Google, Apple, Amazon and Facebook? How can we change that in a way where we don’t end up knocking one down for another one to appear in its place? These were some of the questions James Ball shed a light on during this seminar. 

James Ball is the global editor of The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, where he oversees the not-for-profit’s international reporting projects. He also works as a freelance writer and broadcaster, and is a weekly columnist for The New European. He was previously a special correspondent at BuzzFeed UK and special projects editor at The Guardian, where he played a key role in the Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the NSA leaks by Edward Snowden, as well as several other projects of huge significance. James is the author of multiple books, including "Post-Truth and "Bluffocracy". His next book, "The System: who owns the internet and how it owns us" is published by Bloomsbury in August 2020.

16, October 2020:
Alberto Cairo: How to make good choices when designing visualizations (EN)



Alberto Cairo is a journalist and designer, and the Knight Chair in Visual Journalism at the School of Communication of the University of Miami (UM). He is also the director of the visualization program at UM’s Center for Computational Science. He has been head of information graphics at media publications in Spain and Brazil. In this online seminar, Cairo showed how journalists can make data visualizations and how to make good choices in the process.

Inspiration Journey, webinar with MediaMotorEurope (EN)


What are the challenges, tools and opportunities when dealing with fake news? We invited journalists and compliance teams from TV, radio and the press to discuss how they are checking their stories – and just as importantly – what are the tools missing in their toolbox? The virtual breakfast seminar was also targeted at startups and scaleups across Europe with potential solutions that can help in the fight against fake news. 


The EU project MediaMotorEurope (MME) is a brand new mentoring program framed under the Startup Europe initiative (H2020), that aims to nurture high-potential European deep tech innovators to solve today's most prominent media industry challenges and support them in building the media solutions of tomorrow. In MME, Media City Bergen is part of a large ecosystem, powered by strong media and innovation hubs, as well as key players in the tech and investment scene: VIS Mediekuben, VRT, Thermi, Athens Technology Center, Cluster Sofia Knowledge City, FastTrack, and F6S.

Frokostmøte om redaksjonell innovasjon (NO)

Koronakrisen har vært krevende for mediehusene, men samtidig ser vi at innovasjonskraften i norske redaksjoner knapt har vært større enn nå. Møt noen av dem som har tatt nye løft i en svært krevende tid og som gjennom bruk av teknologi og nye fortellergrep har lansert helt nye tjenester og produkter - midt i krisen.

This breakfast meeting discussed innovation in the newsroom and showcased some of the new services and products launched by key Norwegian publishers during the Covid 19 crisis.

Henk van Ess: Visual Search (EN)

During this two-hour workshop, Henk Van Ess and the participants delved into visual search, more specifically how to find a hidden story by looking at just one Facebook cover picture. Internationally renowned expert on investigative journalism, Henk van Ess, specializes in social media, data journalism and digital storytelling. He is also affiliated with Bellingcat and Poynters international fact-checking network.

Henk van Ess er spesialist i undersøkende journalistikk, datajournalistikk, sosiale medier og digital storytelling. Han er tilknyttet det anerkjente Bellingcat-teamet, så vel som Poynters internasjonale "Fact-Checking Network". Les mer om deltakernes erfaringer fra workshopen.




16 February, 2021: 

Digitalt frokostmøte om datavisualisering (NO)


Hvordan kan visuelle virkemidler styrke formidling? 16. februar inviterte MCB JoLab til et digitalt frokostmøte om datavisualisering hvor vi hørte fra fra datavisualiseringseksperten Professor Martin Engebretsen (UiA) som delte funn fra det nylig avsluttede forskningsprosjektet INDVIL, Jonas Blich Bakken fra Dagens Næringsliv fortalte om "Kjønn og lønn; Veien fra 30 enorme regneark til en forståelig historie", som resulterte i saken Lønnsgapet. Håvard Tveit (CEO Everviz) demonstrete hvordan du kan benytte Everviz for å enkelt visualisere dine data.

This seminar discussed how visualization and data can be used to enhance journalism and storytelling, and showcased results from a Norwegian research project INDVIL

Henk van Ess; How to verify during Corona and beyond. Fix the bias in Google (EN)

Internationally renowned expert on investigative journalism, Henk van Ess, specializes in social media, data journalism and digital storytelling. He is also affiliated with Bellingcat and Poynters international fact-checking network. During this online workshop van Ess showed various tips and tricks on how to verify during Corona and beyond, as well as how to fix the bias in Google. The participants learned how they, by using various techniques, could correct the biases that google searches entail, as well as how they could use these techniques to do web investigations to uncover hidden information.
