– An important and interesting project, and a unique opportunity to work together with leading international publishers, says Lars Helle, Editor in Chief in Stavanger Aftenblad. They will be part of the Norwegian team from the Media Cluster, in good company with The Guardian, Deutsche Welle, Sveriges Radio, and others. The teams will work together to create new tools for the future newsroom.

The aim is editorial innovation as Media City Bergen gathers Cluster Members Stavanger Aftenblad, Fædrelandsvennen, Dagens Næringsliv og Factiverse to participate in the JournalismAI Collab Challenges. The ambition is to create new ideas, prototypes, and solutions on how artificial intelligence (AI) can be utilized by journalists and newsrooms. Together the teams will explore how AI can create new opportunities for publishers worldwide.

Global initiative

The JournalismAI Collab is a global collaborative experiment launched in June 2020 by the London School of Economics and Political Science. It is supported by the BBC News Lab, the Media Cluster in Cardiff, Clwstwr, and  Northwestern University Knight Lab in the USA, and backed by the Google News Initiative

The JournalismAI Collab Challenges was initiated to give editorial innovation on AI a platform, and the number of applicants for JournalismAI Collab Challenges was reported to be overwhelming.

Media City Bergen's team has been selected as one of only 19 organizations worldwide. It is a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of AI innovation aimed at newsrooms, together with a stellar lineup of international publishers. See the list here

– Never before have great journalism been more important, especially in an era where it is becoming increasingly difficult to reach citizens with relevant information. Therefore, it is fantastic to collaborate with our peers to innovate, learn, and exchange ideas and explore how new technologies like AI can empower news stories, says Anne Jacobsen, CEO of Media City Bergen.

Four Media Cluster Companies

Stavanger Aftenblad is part of the Media City Bergen team.

– This is an important and interesting project and a unique opportunity to work together with leading international publishers, says Lars Helle, Editor in Chief in Stavanger Aftenblad.

– It's evident that the challenges ahead will partly be solved with new technology. Furthermore, our challenges are not local; they are shared with our colleagues worldwide when it comes to reaching our audiences, finding sustainable business models, and not forgetting our joint competition with the tech giants. Therefore, it makes sense to collaborate and join forces over the following months to develop new concepts, solutions, and ideas.

High expectations

News editor Rolf Sørland be the representative from From Stavanger Aftenblad in the Media Cluster team.

I look forward to starting, and I have high expectations, both to connect and get to know the teams from these leading European publishers and learn, share, and develop together with the Media Cluster team and colleagues in Fevennen, DN, and Factiverse, says Rolf.

- Together, we will explore how AI can be utilized in journalism and the newsrooms and how this can contribute to closer contact with our audience, better services, or new storytelling formats.
